How are you getting on Superman?
I too moved to the 'other side of the world' by myself on a work visa and at first it was one big adventure. Frustrations and confusion, but still I was taking it in stride.... I felt pretty adjusted! But..... then, about 4 months in, it was depression central. Not a holiday anymore! I was pretty overwhelmed and just feeling a bit out of sorts (if I remember too, I had been on a work trip to the US the week before - so was jet lagged, feeling like I was a 'poser' here and missing family). I took solace here on UKY. But it got better. Then I got seriously ill a few months later -in and out of hospital- and that had a whole set of issues with that too. I really started to feel in my element about 18 months in and knew at that point, that Scotland was my home.
I suppose the thing is, we expect in our minds, that just because the language is the same, that it's the same. It's a bigger cultural shift than one may expect. Ok, it's a given that there are probably much bigger cultural shifts to other countries of the world, but there are expat groups that exist all over the world in various countries to help folks out. We're no different either!
You're now only a few weeks in and it was all a whirlwind! - but hopefully it's getting better. Life is full of ups and downs. We're all different in terms of adjustment, yet you never know when something will throw you. So if it hits you again, no problem, we're still here for you.
