New show about immigration attitudes in the UK
« on: July 17, 2014, 04:16:55 PM »
I frequently watch BBC documentary type shows in my spare time via a proxy server and iplayer, and I just watched a 2 part show about immigration attitudes in the UK, wherein they got 5 of the most xenophobic British people they could find and paired them off with 5 immigrants.  Then at the end of their experience, the Brits would decide whether they think their immigrant counterpart was a drain of a gain on the UK.  Some of the Brits changed their attitudes about immigration completely, while other declared their new immigrant friend to be a gain, but refused to believe that the majority of immigrants were also a gain.

On the bright side, all of the Brits thought the immigrants were a gain in the end, and their experiences with the immigrants were interspersed with hard data about the effect immigrants have on the UK, nearly all of which was positive.  I was a bit disappointed that they didn't combat the wrongheaded idea that migration from outside the EU is an "open floodgate" as many of the Brits seemed to imply, since we all know personally that that is most definitely not the case.

Anyhow, its well worth a watch, and is slightly encouraging.  its called Nick and Margaret: Too Many Immigrants?

You're still in GA right?  Just a tip for watching iplayer if you've not got it figured out, you can use an extension for google chrome called hola and it will let you watch iplayer. Just get it to a UK proxy. Super easy to use and free!

Yep, still in GA for now. I have a Mac, so I use the stealthy feature on Firefox.  As long as it's up to date, it works pretty well. Our desktop recently died :( I have found when I use iplayer that I have to connect directly to the router instead of wifi, though. Otherwise the experience is terrible.
