Looking for families with toddlers in Edinburgh area
« on: July 31, 2014, 12:25:18 AM »
Hi all!!  My husband, 2 year old son and I will be moving to the Edinburgh area within the next several months (if all goes well).  We're looking for families to meet, get some advice, possibly playdates, and just have some friendly faces!!

Hi, there -
I live in Edinburgh just now but we're moving to Burntisland (about 30 minutes away) in a few weeks. I've got two girls, 2.5 and 9 months. I'd be happy to meet up when you get here and explain how everything works. There's a great community of mother and toddler groups in edinburgh so you should be able to find some local mums quite easily.
Let me know if you have any specific questions - and I'll see you when you get here!

Awesome!!!  Thanks so much!!! One of our biggest concerns is where to live (we'll be renting of course), and how to find a job for me.  My husband's company is transferring him but I'll need something, maybe part time while our little one is at school.  Speaking of school, our little one will be 3 but I'm not sure when he'll need to start school.  Any help you can give up to and after the move would be great!  And we'll definitely have to meet up!
Mostly right now I'm very concerned about what area we need to look for flats.  Would have to be near public transport.  We're nowhere near ready to try to drive there yet!! lol  ;D ;D
Hope to talk to you soon!

Well, pretty much everything in edinburgh is near to public transport - it's got a great bus system. Are you looking to be close to the city centre or further out or in a suburb? I can suggest some areas and good apps to search within if you'd like. Once a child turns three, they are offered 15 free hours of childcare a week, tho your local nursery may have a waiting list of those who've had their kids' names down for a while. But, in general, 3 and 4 year olds get 15 free hours of childcare a week, often at a nursery attached to the local primary school, often 5 mornings or afternoons a week.
As to part-time employment, be warned that childcare is quite expensive, between £38 - £45 per day. You may be able to use your 15 free hours in a private nursery, but I'm still learning how all of it works. You'd have to ask your eventual childcare provider.
The age cut-off for each school year is the end of February. Check out the edinburgh council website for info about when your 3 year old can start based on their birthday. Nursery=preschool.
Let me know if you have any more questions, happy to help.

All helpful insight! Thanks!!  If you don't mind, will you PM me or I can send one to you?  I'd like to keep in touch and I'm afraid I'm going to lose this post (it's happened before!) I'm sure I'll have many more questions.
