Planning Problems
« on: December 02, 2004, 12:04:19 PM »
Just got engaged and I have no idea how to do this.

I dont want to get married in the USA.  But I have tons of family there.

I want to get married in England, but with the exchange rate the way it is, I dont want my father going into debt for my wedding (we plan to pay half).

My honey was saying we should get married somewhere hot, but I cant expect my family to fly to the Greek Islands for my wedding....and I dont want to get married in the carribean because I want to go to Malaysia or Mauritius for my honeymoon!!

I want to have immediate family come out here, but if I dont invite other extended family they will be hurt.

Anyone been through this??

Have you thought about getting married at your honeymoon destination?

Or, you could get married in a small ceremony in the UK that you cover yourselves and then go back to the US for a big reception that you Dad pays for.  I know at least one couple who did this, they wore their wedding finery and everything but it was a couple of weeks after the wedding.

And whether or not the extended family can come doesn't affect whether or not you invite them.  Invite them all.  Let them decide if they can make it.

Good luck!

Aimiloo took the words right out of my mouth. I got married here at a registry office with a handful of friends and threw a smallish party (mostly 'cause I wanted to wear the dress again and eat cake, LOL) and my mom is going to throw us a party for my family and American friends for our first anniversary (but the only reason we're waiting a year is 'cause we got married at the end of September and didn't want to struggle getting a party together during the holidays.)

We did the same as Aimiloo; we had the actual wedding, a small one, in Chicago and a few months later, a blessing in England.
