Experiences with Delta Cargo for your pet(s)?
« on: October 05, 2014, 07:09:04 PM »
It looks like Delta is going to be the most economical way for myself + a 47 lb. dog + 28 lb. dog + 9 lb. cat to all fly to LHR. I'm not trying to be cheap, because my pets are very important. However, this flight will stretch the limits of our relocation budget. Has anyone used them to fly a pet over? What was your experience?

Of course this is hypothetical still. No visa yet :)

Yes, I used Delta this time last year to get myself & my dog/cat over!
Very happy with them  :D But, I did not fly directly into the UK, I flew into Paris with my dog & cat.
Cost much less and to be honest after reading about the process of flying pets into Heathrow, I preferred to do it that way and would do it again! Also, I would have to, as my cat is a snubnose and most airlines won't take a snubnose in cargo.

I kept my cat on board in a cat carrier & the dog traveled below.  Both animals cost an additional $200 each (as excess baggage) + the cost of my flight vs. the cargo fees and the other fees involved involved going direct into the UK.

All in all, I was very happy with Delta, there was a bit of to-ing & fro-ing when I first started the process, but I made sure I got everything triple & quadruple checked with Delta and from check in, a stop-over, then an over-nite flight to Paris, it was all good  ;D
Check out the threads on this Pets board, lots of info! Good luck!

thanks for the response, Stephanie303

What mode of transportation did you use from Paris to the UK?

No problem, glad to help!

My husband came over with the car  :)  Then it was back to Calais to get the dog/cat's paperwork checked at the Pets Control for Eurotunnel, (took longer to get the animals out of the car then it did for them to stamp the paperwork)! Back in the car and through the tunnel to London. Wasn't a bad journey back at all, better to be in the car with the animals rather then sitting for hours waiting for them to be processed in Heathrow  :P
Though if we had though everything through, we should have stayed overnight (or two) in France, just because it would be an overnite in... La France!   ;D

We looked into Delta initially before plans changed and I do seem to recall they have some temperature restrictions for pets.  This mattered more to us as we were coming out of Minneapolis in December/January.  Not sure when you are leaving, and given your user name suggesting you are in the ATL area, this shouldn't be too much of a problem, but its worth noting as we are heading into the winter months.

thanks, BertineC

I did consider that and I will continue to monitor the forecast to know how I should proceed.  It very rarely gets below 10 degrees here. As part of their new pet program, Delta now has climate-controlled animal holding areas and vehicles to transport pets to the planes (or they claim to, anyway, lol)
