Boston -> London
« on: November 18, 2014, 04:07:48 PM »
In just a couple months my wife and I will be making the big move over to London.  She will be working in the London office for her current job, and I will be working remotely from home for my current job as well.  We just got married... as in 4 days ago... and I believe our visas will be processed at the same time by her company.  I guess my initial question is... what should be doing right now to prepare for the move?

I'm somewhat worried about transitioning my job to be able to work remotely as it's a small company with almost a non-existent HR department.  I feel like I need to be very proactive about any insurance/tax/payroll things, but am not quite sure what needs to be done.  That being said, my company does have remote workers in other countries, so I'm less concerned about it being possible than I am about getting the ball rolling to have everything set up in a couple months.

Congratulations!  You'll need to have a legal UK contract (following UK labour laws).  You may want to research third party companys that can assist in getting a proper contract in place.  You'll also want to figure out your tax situation.  I would imagine you will end up in a self-employed situation and pay HMRC yourself versus having taxes withheld.
