DMV and other logistics before leaving the country?
« on: January 19, 2016, 06:52:26 PM »
I've been a California resident all my life. I can't figure out how to tell the DMV I'm moving out of the country (is it just the normal change of address form?), and I can't seem to find any information on what sort of consequences this may have on me (like is my license invalid after I move out of the country?). I do have a CA address I will continue to use as a base here since I'm not giving up my US bank accounts or anything. Has anyone else moved from California and figured this stuff out?

I'm still waiting for my visa, but I want to take off as soon as possible, so I want to make sure I get everything sorted and I know what I'm doing if/when the approval comes through.

You shouldn't have to notify anyone.

As long as the license is valid you can drive on it for one year in the UK.  If you don't receive your full UK license in that time, you'll be treated as a learner.

Now how long your California license will be considered valid for after you move abroad is a question I can't answer.

Thanks, KFdancer! I stopped by AAA today and asked the DMV counter and they didn't seem to require notification either and they also didn't have an answer for the the validity question! Will need to do more research or inquire at the DMV specifically! If I find out, I'll post it here.

I have been in the UK for over 11 years now and still have a valid CA license (handy for when I visit my family there). I have even renewed it twice! I too use an address for mail and all that jazz in CA.... I really don't think they care about this. I mean, have you met a DMV worker? You don't need to prove any legal status or anything to get the license...

I have a Florida license.  When I rent a car, I use my UK license, just so I know I don't have any issues.

But my Florida license gets me discounted tickets to the theme parks.  :P

We have maintained TX licenses while being overseas, and used them to rent cars in the U.S. when we lived in Asia. At least I won't have to visit the DMV office when we return!
