Transporting furniture from US to UK
« on: September 21, 2014, 09:20:45 PM »
Hello Forum

I was wondering if anyone had any advice or first hand experience regarding how I could transport my furniture from the US to the UK? I am moving to the UK in 2015 and am in the process of planning and researching for my move. Any guidance would be appreciated!

I used Upakweship for my move. I didn't move any furniture but I know they do have services to do that. They were definitely the most economical option I found.

I am planning to move from Oklahoma to England int he spring. I am already partially moved and only have a minimal amount to move. Any suggestion on who to use? I've contacted several companies but so far "UPakWeShip" is the leader. Can anyone give me any feedback? PLEASE. Has anyone used them? What was your experience with them like?

Grrrr!  I just wrote a lengthy reply and then lost it when I timed out (of course the grammar and spelling was perfect too!) - drat!  That will teach me (for the hundredth time) to copy my posts before I hit that "post" button. :-[

Anyway, I just used UpackWeShip's U-Cube service to get my belongings from California to Northeast England - and I would definitely recommend them.  My stuff left the San Francisco Bay Area on Oct. 1st, arrived by ship in Southampton on the 31st (yes, Halloween!), and made it to our door on Nov. 25th.

Communication was great until my things got to Southampton (Alicia is the best!), then it broke down considerably and I was pretty frustrated.  In retrospect the lack of information as to the whereabouts of my big box was mainly to do with the Customs process and an illness in the UK office of UpackWeShip.  It was aggravating to have no idea where my things were for several days at a time, but everything arrived safely and I would absolutely use them again.

I'll be happy to answer any specific questions that I can.  Good luck with your move!  :)

P. S.  Yes, I did remember to copy before posting this time.  ;)

I've done this a few times between the two countries and I've always used Interdean. They're expensive, but they're careful. They do everything - like unpack boxes and take away cardboard (which you'll have to plan for btw). The last time I used them was to go the opposite way, Reading in the UK to East Coast US in the Summer of 2014 for a second home and were charged about £5k for half container. It matters a lot where you're shipping from or to - through the canal or not.
