One way flight vs return flight cost
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:50:16 PM »
Hi
Looking at booking a ticket for my husband to join me, and the return flight is over £200 cheaper than just one-way.  I was thinking of booking a return for 6 months later, but then not using it.  Has anyone else done this recently?

Thanks.

I've never done it but I'd recommend checking the fine print for the airline you're thinking of flying.

Some airlines will charge you if you don't show up for the return flight. :-\\\\ Their (cruel) attempt to prevent people using the loophole. :\\\'(

Do you have air miles you can use for a one-way?

If you're flexible on dates, try flying in the middle of the week. It's usually a lot cheaper to avoid the weekend.

I did that when I moved over last February. Bought the round trip ticket and just didn't use the return ticket in June. The one way flight costs were ridiculous, it was more expensive by about $300 or $400 than the round trip.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

We've booked round trip a few times over the last several years when needing one way, simply because it was cheaper. We were never charged more for not showing, so that fee must depend on the airline.

Just for kicks, try looking at one-way flights on oojo.com, assuming your husband is coming from the states. I bought my one-way ticket through them in 2012 for a price that was comparable to (or cheaper than, I can't remember... I think it ran me around $600 at the time) that of a return.

You could always book a return and then use the return leg for a visit back to the US at some point in the future.

I have in the past booked a return ticket and just not used the second leg - it wasn't an issue, but it has been a while since I did that.

What you definitely don't want to do though is book a return and try to only use the return leg... because if you don't show up for the first flight, they will assume you aren't travelling at all and will cancel the second one.

We are booking a one way flight on Iceland Air for just over $370.00 each.  We will be flying from Boston via Reykjavik to Glasgow.  They also do flights to England from Reykjavik.  The best thing about Iceland air is that you get 2 checked bags (50lbs or 23kg) per adult free plus one carry on and one small personal bag/laptop.

If you are under 26 then you may be able to find cheaper one-way flights on STA.com or .co.uk.  There can be some great deals on there, especially if you are flying from a major city.
