What papers do you submit with your taxes?
« on: January 30, 2015, 01:58:49 PM »
My taxes are always straightforward, not a ton of money, no kids, nothing to claim.  2014 was the first year having a job here. I'll have  more questions later but for now what documents would I send in with my tax form? P45? Pay check at the end of December that states the year to date amount?
Keepin' it real. Real annoying.

You actually don't need to include your foreign income items along with your US return. In most cases you will just report the income made for the year (make sure you reconcile your income information so that it fits the Jan-Dec tax year...don't just file based on what you made during the UK tax year), and submit the forms needed for your situation.

You will of course file the 1040 and then depending on your situation, you will likely use either the Form 2555 or Form 1116.

Good luck!

You attach nothing to a UK return.

With a US return you need to attach a W-2, or 1099 or 1042-S but only if there is US withholding tax to claim. You do not attach P60s, P45s or payslips or foreign tax returns.

You do have to file - at least - 1040, Schedule B, 2555 and/or 1116, 8965, possibly 8938 and FinCEN 114.  Enjoy.

Just note that FinCen 114 (commonly called FBAR) is not filed with your tax return. This is a separate reporting requirement if your financial accounts meet the thresholds.

See: http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Report-of-Foreign-Bank-and-Financial-Accounts-FBAR

(Ignore the reference to small businesses and self-employed - just read further down to the 'who must file' section.)

Thank you kindly, this makes everything so much easier. Aye, I filed the FBAR last year and will do so again this year. :)
