Help for First Time Tax Filing Abroad
« on: February 07, 2015, 12:28:57 PM »
Hi guys,

My wife has come to file her taxes however we seem to be getting quite confused.

She uses TurboTax to file her taxes normally. However we can't seem to find an option that explains that you now live abroad.

Does anybody have just any suggestions? We really don't know where to start. Is there a service that can take care of this for you maybe?

Her taxes are very straight forward with no owned property, no investments, or dependants etc.

Thanks,

Ben

Your wife arrived in the UK in May 2014. Did she have US health insurance coverage for the remainder of the calendar year?

TIP: Read the instructions for Form 8965 to find out why this is important and may delay her filing.

Hi there Ben,

When you do the "tax interview" with TT online, it should be able to accommodate a foreign mailing address. Separately you may be asked which states you lived in during the tax year - choose both "foreign country" and whatever other state(s) your wife lived in during 2014.

When you're entering all the figures, make sure to fill in the sections labeled "foreign earned income exclusion" and "foreign tax credit". Those topics have been extensively discussed on this board, so your best bet is to have a look through the archives if you're unsure how to answer the TT questions.

I agree with guya's comment, your wife will need to wait until she has spent 330 days outside the US before filing Form 8965. I'd suggest you get an extension of the filing deadline until October - you can do this quickly, easily and automatically through TT. But make sure your wife has made a payment to cover any tax she owes by April 15th, otherwise any amount due will accrue interest until it is paid.

Best of luck!
