British values test for foreigners
« on: February 23, 2015, 06:57:21 PM »

http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/2015/02/theresa-mays-british-values-test-overseas-visitors-has-been-branded-ridiculous-idea

However the article goes on to say that:

"The government has previously defined “British values” as, “democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs”

which sounds pretty good actually.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

The Society of Friends has reservations about these British "values" being imposed on everyone.  http://www.theguardian.com/education/2015/feb/18/schools-teach-british-values-quakers

It's not that there's anything wrong with democracy, liberty, respect, etc.  Those are excellent values (and it would be lovely if they were actually, formally guaranteed in some kind of official document).

But it just seems a bit weird to be 'testing' visitors on them.  It's the kind of thing you expect to see making the rounds on Facebook, with lots of stars and stripes and bald eagles in the background.

Of course!

What kind of questions do you ask?

1. You are walking down the High Street and see an elderly man with a cane. Do you:

a. Kick his cane out from under him and snigger when he falls.
b. Salute him as he may have served in a foreign war.
c. Respect him in a quiet and civil manner.
