Should I put the house under my wife's name?
« on: May 05, 2015, 12:25:18 PM »
Something my wife just brought up, putting the new house under both names....or just my wife's name. I had mentioned to her in the past that it might be better for our taxes to have the house in only my wife's name....especially if a few years from now I try to take my (UK) wife off my US taxes. Any idea's on this?

Well, I mean, what if she throws you out?

Hah!! Always a possibility of course.....

But I was more interested in how this could effect my taxes in the future (probably should put this under the Tax section). At this time I am filing jointly......but in the future it may or may not be more beneficial to file separately.

Heck, I've been thrown out before....came home from work and my sports jacket was draped over an azalea bush out front....no signals really. I thought, "That's funny, my jacket is on the azalea bush." And then my bowling ball rolls out the front door and down the front steps....clunk, clunk.....CLUNK!

She was ready for me...a long list of my transgressions....I was flat footed trying to respond to them with no prep..."Well, it's true I don't.....I guess you have a point about the...I could try and..."

So I throw loose clothing and tennis racquets and old unwanted wall art into the back of the jeep and haul buggy up to the cash machine.....it's what you do in that sort of situation.....cancelled. Bank closed until the next day.

But anyhow, I'll back out....

I think this is more in line with 2 UK people. The problem for us is to avoid the US stupid tax on selling this house 20 years from now......we wish to avoid the "Boris" (Johnson) issue. Putting the house in my wife's name....and getting her off my US taxes in a few years.....to avoid future taxes is the point.

Ah, this is not an issue for me, so fair enough!  ;)
