Traveling with ESA
« on: August 17, 2015, 07:28:03 PM »
Hi guys!

It's been awhile since I've been here, but I'm due to fly back to the UK for my final year of uni and I'm hoping to bring my girl with me this time!

A little info on her. She is an 8 year old Boston Terrier turning 9 this year. She is newly registered as an ESA (Emotional Support Animal) due to my being diagnosed with Panic Disorder. So thankfully she can fly on my Delta flight with me for free.

I am trying to get her up to date on everything she needs before we fly but my vet is giving me some hassle.

She is already microchipped. She was chipped back in 2008 or something like that, so that was never a concern of mine. It was through Home Again, so I'm not sure if it's ISO or not, but I can rent a reader if that poses a problem, so again I'm not concerned with it.

She was vaccinated for rabies about 4 months ago, maybe 3.

I am under the impression that all I need to do at this point is take the necessary paperwork to my vet to fill out dates and everything, get her booster shots if necessary and then get it all approved with the USDA (who I have called and am currently working with).

My vet seems to think I've left everything too late (and thus won't schedule an appointment for me)... I'm not entirely sure how. She keeps mentioning a blood test, but I haven't found any info on what the blood test is she's referring to.

I guess my main question is have I really left this too late if I'm leaving in about 2 weeks? What is the blood test she's talking about?

My next questions involve arriving in Heathrow, since my dog is an ESA and will actually be WITH me during the flight, how does this work when I go through customs? I'm hoping someone here has experience flying with support animals or service dogs of some kind.

I appreciate any help you can give! I'm stressing and worried I'll have to leave her with my family again for my final year when my panic attacks are basically unbearable and I need to focus on school.

A lot of info re: the changes that came into effect in December 2014 is here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/390396/pet-travel-scheme-dec-2014-guidance.pdf

Everything is on here:

https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad/overview (this is the 1st page - just keep going).

The USA is a 'listed country', so you need to follow the rules as written. It's been >4 years since we brought an animal to the UK, and (almost) everything has changed. Your vet may not be up to date, but I haven't read everything as no need to, so I can't comment specifically. Others here certainly can.

Good luck!
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!
