UCAS points?
« on: September 08, 2015, 06:26:39 PM »
Hi everyone!

Im filling out applications for a job here in the UK and a question I have recently come across was asking for UCAS points (or equivalent)..

From what I am reading it looks like UCAS points are what you get from your high school qualifications? I am not sure what to do here as it is a required area to fill in and you only have number to choose (200+, 100), for example.

Has anyone here came across this question on their job application, and what did you do? I can't proceed until I've filled this out.

Thank you!! April

UCAS points are generally what you are given for the grades you get at A level in the UK, so an A grade is 120 points, a B grade is 100 points, C is 80 points etc. So, a student who took 3 A levels and got 3 A grades will have 360 points, while a student who got A, B and C will have 300 points etc.

See here for A level grade points:
https://www.ucas.com/ucas/undergraduate/getting-started/entry-requirements/tariff/tariff-tables/946

And points for other qualifications:

So, I guess you would need to figure out what your US qualifications are equivalent to (A levels are approx equivalent to AP classes or college prep classes) and then see if you can work out how many points they are worth.

Thanks ksand24!

What if I never took AP classes? I graduated from high school about 14 years ago and we didn't have many AP classes to choose from at my school. Only things like AP chemistry and a couple others. I do have an associates degree, would this count as UCAS points?

Yes, an associates degrees is often also counted as being equivalent to AP classes for UK universities.

If I remember correctly, you have been studying in the UK, right? UCAS points are required to get into a degree program in the UK (that's what UCAS is for - it stands for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service), so what qualifications did you need to get into the university you studied at?

It's worth either asking your university how many points they would consider an associates degree to be worth or contacting NARIC to ask them to convert your US qualifications into UK equivalents.
