Paying for rent without UK bank account
« on: September 14, 2015, 02:26:24 PM »
Hello! What is the best way to pay for the first month's rent / security deposit / etc. before having a UK bank account? Do most landlords take Paypal?

It's a viscous circle.  The bank will want you to have a permanent address (lease) to open an account.  The landlord will want bank details before signing a lease.

If the landlord will accept paypal or cash, it would be ideal.  But it'll depend on the landlord.

In my circumstance, my HR/payroll department paid my initial deposits so that I could sign the lease.  I then opened a bank account and transferred the funds back to my company.

That's a good idea - I'll talk to HR if I can't manage an alternative! Did anyone else do something different?

Not sure what your housing needs are, but I moved into a shared house where I could just put a cash deposit and first months rent into the house account that I had verified with the property management company. I had an old bank account that made opening a new one easier, but did have to use my business address while I was still looking for a permanent place.

I pay my rent every month from my Bank of America account in the US to my landlords Royal Bank of Scotland account by wire. It costs me more than I would like to pay but as my landlord is listed as a "business" account Xoom.com won't touch it, they only handle personal transfers and they are by far the most efficient and cheapest way I can find. I havent looked at PayPal but I am not a big fan of them anyway. My landlord is happy with the fact my rent arrives every month on time........that's what is important anyway.
