Filing taxes myself - help
« on: January 11, 2016, 08:47:22 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Hoping someone her emight be able to help me as I really dont want to (cant afford) to pay a professional to file my taxes....

I lived in the Netherlands from 2009- 2014 and filed my USA taxes myself just fine. But now... I'm a bit confused. I've always filed just the 1116 and the 1040 as I paid a lot of taxes in the NL. Now though with the P60, it looks like I'm not paying enough taxes! (eep!). I'm wondering if national insurance also counts as a tax? Should I add that to the amount I paid in tax to the UK?
Or should I also fill out the earned income form 2555?

I fee like I must be doing something wrong as there's no way I didnt pay enough tax here to have to pay to the USA as well ( I make less than £40,000/year) and have little savings.

Many thanks!!

It sounds as if you may have elected to claim foreign tax credits on the accrued method, but have a short UK tax year so do not have enough accrual. Why not elect to claim the foreign earned income exclusion when all the information is available for 2015?
