I never knew sticks of butter were different across the USA

Hmph, who knew?

So when expats are moaning about a stick of butter, what size/shape do they mean?  :D

LOL - it's not about the shape, it's the overall weight - 4 oz - and those lovely little tick marks that allow bakers like me to quickly lop off 2 tablespoons (or whatever).

I do weigh stuff now and have a nice conversion chart for various things, but the ease of American Standard Measure is my preference  ;D.

Agreed.  They could be circular for all I care; I miss the 1 tablespoon tick marks!  I can make do with all the other conversions and measurements, I just miss easily measuring butter.

Edited to add that I also didn't realize that the size of the sticks were different across the country.  Learned something new!

I had no idea that sticks differed across the US until yesterday!

And yes. I miss tablespoon tick marks. I keep having to check how much one tablespoon weighs and go from there :P

Well, I've had several different dimensions of butter sticks in my hometown back in the US, but they were always the same weight, 4oz, with all the tablespoons marked on it.

Some were short and fat, other sticks were long and thin. You could get butter like the UK style, but if you bake with it or cook with it everything is in tablespoons. Generally you'd buy a pound of butter in 4 sticks.

A US customer just returned a Tupperware Butter Dish because her butter didn't fit!  It is designed for a UK 250g block, and I have now added a health warning to the product description!

The whole 'stick of butter' thing really bugs me when I am using a US recipe in the UK.  In general, I try not to use US recipes, but very occasionally I do... luckily, the last time I made Never Fail Fudge, I wrote the conversion on the bit of paper:  57 grams!
