Scottish Girl

Hey all,

My name is Amy, I'm 25 years old and Scottish. I'm here gathering info to try to get my beautiful American girlfriend over here for good and its looking to be a real challenge.

We looked into me going over there if we fail to get her here as it looks like I only have to be married to her to get into the US where as to get someone here we have to pay a fortune and jump through hoops.

I just feel we will both have a better life in Scotland than in the US.

But anyway. Hi :3

Welcome to the forum :).

I replied to your other thread about visa options just now :).

It's not all that easy to get to the US either (4 years ago, before they tightened the requirements for UK visas, it was much easier to get a UK visa than a US one)- as well as being married, there are income requirements to meet and then the visa process is long and drawn out, involving interviews and medical exams... and it takes about 8-10 months from application for the visa to be approved.

The UK visa application process is much faster and only involves sending the application by post - no interviews or medicals - and if you can afford priority processing the visa can be processed in as little as 1-2 weeks (sometimes even 1-2 days). However, the requirements are a bit stricter for a UK marriage or spousal visa and the visas are more expensive.

Basically though, for her to qualify for a UK settlement (marriage/spousal) visa, you just need either be getting married within 6 months or already married, and you need to meet 3 main requirements:

- genuine relationship
- you meet the minimum income threshold
- you have suitable accommodation to live in in the UK

Hello there, I thought I would drop a note of optimism amongst all the miserable visa talk.

You can do it, my wife and I met in the US in 1989 and have been able to get married, have kids and live a great life.  She's French, I'm American and our kids are British.

Admittedly, things were easier for us since all the paperwork was different and our relationship seems to be more conventional than yours, but that's no big deal.

Good Luck!
