American Newbie in France, moving to the UK... Hopefully
« on: November 19, 2004, 06:16:54 PM »
Greetings and Salutations all!
Just found this fantastic forum, and will be here often! I married a Brit (back in the states), 10 years ago. We had planned for him to move "back home" by the time he was able to retire. Well, a position in Paris came up, and we made the big leap. Looks like the position wasn't quite so stable (hrumph) and he's now looking at jobs in the UK (yeeee haaaa, finally). Not exactly sure where we'll land up, but I'm doing my homework.  The only thing keeping us from moving sooner is this bloody pet passport thingy.

I hope to learn as much as I can about finding a job and getting settled... from you experts here.  ;D

For now, I'm content to enjoy the Auvergne Region, spend Christmas with my darling hubby and our daughters (visiting from the states), and gear up for yet another move!

Me? Well... born in Tampa, raised in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. Lived in Charlotte (North Carolina), was a potter in Seagrove (North Carolina)... met and married this Brit fella.... then lived in Tucson, Arizona, Pine Bluff (Arkansas... ick) and up in the coooold, cold north, South Dakota. From SD we made the leap to Paris. VERY BIG LEAP! I think I've recovered from the move, and am enjoying being out of the states, especially in light of the recent election.   :-X

I'm very much looking forward to getting to know you all. By the way, I make a mean pot of tea!... a killer Yorkshire Pud... and to die for Fish and chips! Think I'll survive?  ::)

Welcome, PitterPat! I'm sure you'll find these pages an absolute wealth of information! Are you planning on re-locating near your hubby's home, or will it depend on work?

Meanwhile, tell us about life in Auvergne! I think a few of us have aspirations of retirement to the continent and I, for one, am very curious about life in France!  :)

Hi and welcome to UKY!  Wow you have had quite the adeventure!  They say the best way to really learn about a place is to live there so I guess you are really getting to know places.  Okay that sounded a bit daft, but anyways...

I for one am very happy they decided to do the whole PETS thing and I would love to hear about your experience in moving a pet within the EU.  What kind of pet/pets do you have?

Welcome to the site - I really enjoyed reading your introduction. :) You'll find loads of info here and if you don't see what you need, just ask! South Dakota to Paris, eh? I'm well impressed!
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

::)  Wow! Thanks for the warm and fuzzy welcome.

Moving our pets to France was not a problem at all. We simply took them to the vet and got their rabies shots current.... found a Vet to microchip them... and walked our RURAL South Dakota Vet through the process..... where we decided he was better suited to tagging our dogs with cow tags then putting a micro-chip in them.  :o

We brought our two youngest dogs with us, Penny and Luigi, sister and brother Maltese. Our 4 legged family members consisted of 5 cats and 6 dogs, before we left. THE most difficult part of our move was finding "perfect" homes for my firbabies!

Well, we still have Penny and Luigi, but we also have a little Catherine Parrot, a Parakeet/Budgie and an African Grey! The birds will be much easier to get into the UK then myself or my two pups! The waiting for 6 months "after" the rabies blood test is a killer!

The Auvergne region of France is (I think) the new "up and coming" place Brits are moving to. It's lovely here! We're in Clermont-Ferrand... surrounded by ancient/dormant volcanoe mountains.... lots of farmland.... Roman ruins.... Cathedrals.... Chateaus.... and more.

We will most likely be moving to the N. Yorkshire area... my hubby is from Barnsley, so we'll be close enough to visit cousins.

I appreciate any and all helpful advice, and am sure I'll have oooodles of questions over the coming months.

With many thanks
