Working freelance across borders is fine (I have Swiss and Polish clients, in addition to UK), but I think you'll run into problems on the residency issue. If you're splitting time between countries, you'll be 'ordinarily resident' in both the UK and US (or in neither?), and that'll make things sticky enough that I'd advise seeking out a tax pro with UK and US expertise. I don't have any recommendations on that front, because I've not needed such services, but London seems to have a fair few.
