Pitch, Sell, or Send
« on: January 24, 2016, 09:18:30 PM »
So I think I've probably got about 3-4 months before the big move. I'm selling most of my furniture on Craigslist. I already took 5 bags of clothes to the Goodwill. I'm going through my tech/home theatre equipment and seeing what I can easily bring with me.

From the boards here I've realised that moving most furniture/electronics is an exercise in futility because 1. Everything is bigger in America.
2. Not everything works in the UK that works in the UK.

Basically I've decided to leave/sell anything electrical that can't be switched out. The only thing so far that I don't want to part with is my 55 inch TV. But from what I can tell, it's not going to work in the UK.

I know that I can buy a step down converter, but is it worth the trouble? When it comes to electronics and long term use of a converter I'm concerned with fires or damaging the unit I've so preciously lugged 4k miles.

You'd definitely need a converter (100-120V ~ 60Hz won't work in the UK), and while I fully understand the love, I'd still sell it and buy a new one in the UK. I wouldn't want to screw around with converters (for the hassle more than any safety concern), and I wouldn't want to have to worry about some moving company clown smashing up my TV.

Running electrical items that you use a lot on converters isn't really practical in the long term. We tried this when we moved to the US, and had to put the converters on metal plates as they became very hot.

I do use a US sewing machine in the UK, it is fine but is not used for long periods.

My advice would be that, unless the item is switchable or just needs a change of cable and plug (such as a computer/laptop/tablet/phone), you might as well sell it and buy when you arrive. Gumtree is a good source of 2nd hand items, we're selling  our stereo and TV in preparation for moving back in the summer.
