Houston to England Scotland border
« on: January 31, 2016, 03:29:18 AM »
Hi I found this blog from a FB comment section and wanted to press my luck and see if there were anyone locally near me.  I married a Scottish man and I am now a stay at home wifey.  I was a Paralegal in Texas with my own Private investigation and process serving company.  I was active in sports and traveled and actually DID STUFF... Hubby kinda pretended to like and do the same and then i get here and bammm Tesco and Asda shopping is our "out times".  On top of things I am maybe 1-5 black Americans for about 45 miles so it is extra stressful.  No one speaks and I feel like an invisible dark ghost. Kinda just frustrated I have been here almost a year back and forth due to my Visa.  I'm granted 3yrs now so hopefully it gets better..  I still haven't driven and am pretty much reliant on my feet getting me to places as well as his willingness to go places.  I'm 34 no kids and just kinda am treading to see what's in here. LOL not really a Yankee OR a fan of em but thought I'd still say hello.

Hi ScottishTexan
I'm not really that near you - I live just north of Edinburgh in Fife. Just thought I'd say hi and let you know that it seems to take everyone a fair bit of time to adjust. Best to get yourself involved in some local clubs and do some volunteering - there's tonnes of opportunities and it can be a great way to meet people. Also, learn how to drive over here, you'll have to take a few lessons and that will be something else to do. Personally? I'd join a choir, a running club, join the Befrienders (or similar), find a good coffee shook earn to drive and look for a part time job.
Happy to help if you've got any questions. I'm originally from Maryland but have lived in Scotland on and off for the last 15 years.
Good luck!

Well that sounds pretty cool!

I like in the movies where the process server always has a real snappy line when they serve somebody, "Oh wait. I'm not with the lottery after all.....you've been served..booya!"
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Hiya...
If I were you, I would focus on getting my UK driving licence.  Being able to drive would give you some independence, which will probably make you feel a lot better!

Start here:

(oh, btw... I am originally from California, but have been living in Scotland since 1985, apart from 4 years in London  :)  I currently live in Helensburgh in Argyll, so not near you, but just wanted to say hi and wish you luck.)

Hi Scottish Texan, I wanted to add my voice to the welcome committee!   :)

I second the excellent suggestions from eatoomey and Albatross.

I think that getting involved in sports could provide you with that sense of camaraderie and belonging that may be missing at the moment and there's nothing like a good shot of exercise induced endorphins to lift the mood!  ;D

Thanks for the suggestion my license is actually good here for the 1st yr.  I officially got my 3yr visa in Oct. The insurance additional is something hubby cant quite do just yet.  I am learning to knit and go with the elderly at the library but like i said afterwards i'm still just a ghost.  I also walk 100 miles a month and do the gym here again I've spoken but I'm still just a ghost it seems..  Just got my Nat Ins number so PT job is on my MUST list...

AND to the PI process serving thing, In Texas you cant do roux you have to say who you are when serving, I've served over 1000 people lol my car has the almost 200k miles to prove it..Baby girl Hyundai Sonata has seen and been in some places :)  ...  Best PI job was a cheater case where I followed woman's hubby due to her sense he was creeping around well turns out it was his gym trainer so I actually got paid to workout for that case assignment.

Thanks for the replies yall...LOL still a TEXAN
