Child travel to US on UK passport

I know its US law to travel on a US passport into and out of the US. Has anyone used their child's UK passport to travel to the US recently. I don't have an updated US passport for my daughter.

US citizens have to enter on a US passport, if you tried to enter on a UK passport you would need to get an ESTA visa and as a US citizen you can't get one so the airlines won't let you board the flight.

We just renewed my spouses US passport and it only took 2 weeks from the day we sent it to having the new passport in hand.

Not sure where you are planning on going, but you can enter by land with their US birth certificate (if they were born in the US) or their consular report of birth abroad certificate.

So you could fly into Toronto and drive across the border etc.

From March 2016 all UK passport holders flying into Canada need a ETA visa, if you are a US citizen you can't get one..

Just curious about this -- Surely the Canadian government doesn't care whether you're a UK Citizen or a US Citizen when you enter the country.  Can't the OP just apply for an eTA visa for the child under their UK Citizenship?  I see what you're saying, since US Citizens are exempt from the eTA, but if they enter Canada as a UKC (which I believe is perfectly legal), then this isn't an issue? I mean, it's somewhat risky I suppose, but not illegal.

There's nothing to say a us citizen can't get one.  They may be exempt from needing one, but there's nothing stopping them getting one and entering as British.

Either way though, if British born kids enter Canada on an ESA on a British Passport, the Canadians would have no need to suspect a thing.  If I was to travel via Canada then I'd do it as it would save a few hundred ££££ in passport fees.

I guess it comes down to how comfortable you are about lying on a official application...

When I got my kids passports at the London embassy, they told me several times never to bring my kids into the US on their French passports.  They made such a big deal about it, I got the impression they take it very seriously.  Personally, I would avoid any plan that put me on the wrong side of the border guards.

Got it. Didn't realise they'd ask that; but yeah, definitely makes sense now.  I'm definitely a rule-follower when it comes to travel/immigration!  Thanks for the clarification, Kezzie!

They can't deny a us citizen entry to the USA iirc.

I suppose they could delay things quite a bit though.
