Basically, do I have to wait until I have ILR to open one or am I allowed to open one now? I am on my first spouse visa and won't have ILR for another 3 years.

Hi,

Firstly, do speak with the immigration ministry and immigration specialists etc who may know more about the application process. I'm thinking if there's a section which asks about any assets you own currently and if there's one about what you own already in the UK, or if there's anything where you can add information where you can specify that you are intending purchasing property/assets. If there's nothing of this kind, then I'd doubt there's any advantage to your Visa application.

I'd also say evaluate carefully to ensure help to buy is suitable for you and your circumstances etc. I'd personally never go with such schemes like this and shared ownership etc, but I know that with others, they can be useful.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Hi Sputinka,

Any answers to this? My husband and I both were going to try to get Help to Buy ISAs soon, so I am interested to hear what you've found out.

Thanks!

Currently a Help To Buy ISA is a cash only product. Consequently the interest on the cash plus any UK government bonus would be taxable by the United States, an the account would be FBAR & 8938 reportable. Aside from the tax, there are no bad consequences for a US person.
