Newbie looking for info

My husband and I are in the beginning stages of hopefully moving to the UK.  He's searching for a job, and I'm dealing with logistics, like how much we'll need to save up before we move.  I'm really excited to find this forum. 

A bit about us, we have 6 kids, ranging from 14 to 5.  So far we've homeschooled, but I'm thinking that when we move, we're probably going to put them in school.  I think it will help them adjust best to the new culture.  I do worry a bit, though, about them being not quite where students there are, so that's a concern. 

We're looking at Scotland, but honestly, we'll go where ever we can find a job.

Best of luck!  Finding a job that will sponsor 8 visas will definitely be the biggest challenge.  Is your husband able to transfer with his current company?  You'd only be able to stay for a maximum of five years but it could give you a taste of the UK.

A five year visa (Tier 2 General) would run you (at present, but visa fees do increase) £1,151 per visa. So 8 x 1151 = £9208. A three year Tier 2 General would cost £3497, but this would need to be renewed if you wanted to stay in the UK beyond that (current cost of renewal is £937 per person). The cost of the rest of the move would be entirely up to your location, how much stuff you will bring, if you are buying/ renting etc... but count on expensive.

Unfortunately, no to EU citizenship.  We have a heritage link, but both of our families have been here for quite a while. His grandmother is our closest link, she came over from N. Ireland.  Mine is much further back, from Ireland and England.  His current company doesn't work in Europe.  He's in the wireless industry, manages cell phone tower properties.  We're looking to correlating jobs over there, but, honestly, I think he'll have to leave that industry.  I can't imagine there aren't people there that can do what he does already, or in the EU in general. 

We briefly saw last night a visa for entrepreneurs, so we're going to get with a lawyer over there and explore that option.  He hates his industry, anyway.  We found out we can use our VA loans to buy property overseas, and hopefully have a bit of money coming sometime this year, so perhaps buying a business might work better for us. 

Do you have any recommendations for good immigration lawyers in the UK?  Or good areas for families?  We're not looking at London, that's so expensive.  We've been looking at Scotland, but we're really open to wherever.

You are better off exploring whether or not your husband may have claim to Irish citizenship, as I think it might be possible if you had a grandparent to claim Irish citizenship... you might want to look into it, as you would be able to avoid the many thousands of pounds in visa fees. You would then be under EU regulations.... but of course, he may not have a claim....

Definitely agree with physicskate about looking at the Irish link.

The entrepreneur visa is a great avenue if you've got £200,000+ to invest into a business.

My PA at work is Scottish, I'll ask her next week about areas for families when she returns from holiday next week.  I know she moved down to the Southeast of England as she and her husband had difficulty finding work where they were.

Why not move to Ireland if you can easily get visas there.  Considering how rabidly anti immigration things are turning , it might be more fun anyway. 

Later, if you want to move to the UK it will be easier and cheaper.
