Expat Financial Advisor
« on: April 01, 2016, 12:27:13 AM »
Okay I did something stupid (I think).  This last week I changed my US bank accounts to my UK address and transferred some funds back into those accounts to pay some existing US obligations.  Whatever I did trigger massive alarms at BofA, etc and I've been emailed massive amounts of regs.  Does anybody know of good expat financial advisors?

We change our US accounts to a UK address years ago; that's no big deal, and either is transferring funds....unless of course you are talking gazllions, in which case banks tend to want to know the source of said gazillions.

Without knowing what BofA has emailed and/or said, it's difficult to provide any specific advice or opinion, but for sure this should not mean you need a financial advisor.

Most likely is that you are being reminded of your possible reporting requirements under FATCA, obligation to file a US tax return, and so forth.

Don't panic.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

I agree with vadio. You don't need a financial advisor.

You may be thinking more in terms of an accountant but even then, I don't see why you would need one for that. For tax obligations and reporting, maybe.

We changed my husband's BOA accounts to the UK address with no issues.

Generally unless you have a very complicated tax situation, an accountant is not necessary. If you don't have much experience filing your tax return on your own, TurboTax covers pretty much everything. The old fashioned paper forms, pen, calculator also work quite well for me  ;)

Hi MiaCal,
I also bank with Bank of America and I have a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch. Merrill Lynch is tied to Bank of America so the advisor helps me out when I have issues with my bank accounts or need money transferred to the UK. They don't have anything to do with my accounting, but take care of investing for me.

They told me that ML has changed it's policies and now will no longer work with clients living outside the USA. I just recieved letters from BofA stating that they will no longer service (forget how they put it) Merrill Lynch Wealth Managment accounts for people living outside the USA! I have until this summer to resolve or move my $.

I just thought I'd share this because it might have something to do with your letter? Anyways, I'm going to post this as a new thread in case anyone else has this experience and has opinions or ideas. That way I can update as I find out what will happen and it might help someone else.
Keep us posted
