Hi, hoping to chat with another US retiree who has solved this problem. I retired to the UK about seven years ago (my wife is British) and for the last couple of years have had my retirement checks direct deposited to a US bank account from which the USD have been periodically converted to GBP and wired to my wife's (now ours) NatWest domestic bank account. I would like to close the US bank account and have the checks direct deposited to NatWest in the UK.  But I have discovered from talking with NatWest employees here that NatWest does not have an ABA number - the rest of the world uses SWIFT codes - and without that 9 digit number nothing can happen. Any advice how to solve the problem? Thanks in advance for whatever you can offer.

No advice on this.  Just interested to see what the outcome is.

My SS and pension are going into Bank of America account and we have Barclay's here.  Supposedly, they have some kind of connection (not so you'd notice)  But the time is coming when I'm going to want to shift $$

I have my checks paid into my UK account from Social Security on the 3rd of every month.  It was easy to set up, you go to the SSA link on the US Embassy website and follow the instructions.
https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/federal-benefits/requesting-or-reporting-a-change-of-direct-deposit-for-benefits/

You only need the sort code and account number.  We did this last year after we arrived back in the UK and have been getting our payments without any problems since.

Hope this helps

Agree with Kezzie62, US SS payments to a UK bank should be no problem. I also have US SS deposited into a UK account. SS payments are eventually made from CITIBANK, Ireland (according to my statements) from the SSA to my account with a UK high street bank.

As for US government, US company, or other US pension providers, I have no idea. US Government or company pension providers may require a 'SWIFT' number.

If you have pensions other than US SS, you may wish to consider opening an additional current account at another bank. I have a 'SWIFT' number for HSBC but don't know whether they still use the SWIFT system as well as IBAN. It's the SWIFT number for the old 'Midlands Bank' network and starts with the letters MID_ _ . You might give HSBC ( or Lloyds or Barclays) a call if the US provider can only handle a SWIFT number.

Thank you Kezzie62 for the link and theOAP for the HSBC reference (I had been thinking about them in that connection). That is very helpful and much appreciated.
