Where to start?
« on: July 02, 2016, 11:50:59 AM »
Hi everyone.

I have lived and worked in the UK for just over 5 years now and haven't filed US taxes. My whole adult working life has been in the UK - I've never worked in the US, therefore have never looked at/filed US tax forms, or thought I would have to file. I really don't know where to start, and reading around has left me even more lost. Can anyone help advise please?

The IRS have excellent free content, including video, designed to assist the US person overseas.

Thanks guya.

- So is the 1040 form the standard, mandatory form to start with? And an FBAR?
- My husband is not a US citizen - do I file for just myself?
- I have P60s for tax years 11/12, 12/13, 13/14, 14/15 and 15/16. Do I file these all at once?

Well the 1040 is a good place to start, but you'll probably need to file Schedule B (maybe Schedule A), 1116, 2555, 8965 & 8938 and perhaps some 8621s.  Naturally you are probably FBAR deficient too.

You'll have to decide whether to deliver the documents quietly, noisily, through OVDP or streamlined procedures.
