Perhaps I should clarify something:  my original post related specifically to ISAs.  Charles Schwab UK does not offer ISAs -- full stop.  I know there are ways to purchase US funds -- I was concerned about how to do this within an ISA.

OK, but won't that create an IRS headache for you to own an ISA? If you're American that is.

There's no US tax headache with a cash ISA. A stocks and shares ISA will cause headaches, but you can avoid PFIC issues and HMRC reporting issues if you find one that allows you to buy US Vanguard ETFs.......but those seem top be as common as unicorns.

Right.  Just never thought of doing it that way when I can go for them in Roth IRAs.

Yes, if you have a ROTH that's a way to save with no tax complications in the US or UK.

But yes, I can see how some people can't have Roths, or they have a UK employer helping to fund an ISA?
