Tier 4...work in UK or contract for US company?
« on: September 13, 2016, 09:46:27 PM »
Hello everyone!

I'm studying in Edinburgh for the next year, and my husband came with me on a tier 4 dependent visa. He has no work restrictions (except for not being medical personnel or a sports coach, which isn't a problem).

He is talking to companies in the UK to work for them as a regular employee, but a company in the US (that he formerly worked for) wants him to contract for them.

Has anyone in the UK contracted for a company back home? Would that even work?

Thanks for any info or guidance you can give us! We need a little income...we just paid my tuition in full. Eeep.

Yes, he can do that.  It'll be easiest for him to be a self employed contractor and bill them.  He'll pay tax to the UK, then claim either an exemption or tax credit when he files his US taxes.  Lots of info on how to set up on the HMRC website.
