Masa harina in Belfast?
« on: May 25, 2007, 03:49:56 PM »
I bought a tortilla press last weekend and brought back some cans of green enchilada sauce. Now I just need some masa! I know Sainsbury's carries it, at least online, but I'm too impatient to order it and I have to take two buses to get there myself. Anyone know whether the import shop in the city centre carries it? Or anywhere else in the city centre/Lisburn Road/Queen's University area? I seem to remember seeing it somewhere, but I have no idea where and I might be imagining it anyway...

Enchiladas are going to be this weekend's project, yay!   :D

Sainsburys had it - haven't been there in a good while so I don't know if they still do but I did buy some from them before. Not sure about Sawers but it's likely. You can always ring them but you'll have to do it tomorrow as they are closed now. Also the Mexican booth at St Georges market tomorrow - don't think he will have masa harina with him but he should know where to get what you need.

Thanks, Stella! We found some at Sainsbury's eventually, and the tortillas we made tonight came out pretty good for a first time. I can't believe how tiny the packet was for the price, though. My mom was appalled and said she'd bring me some when they come out in July.  :)

We did go by Sawer's first. They didn't have any, but said they'd had several people asking about it in the past week, and if they get enough demand they'll try to start stocking it. They asked me what brand Sainsbury's was carrying, which sounded like they might actually be serious. I love little independent shops! (They also said something about a type of farina they used to have that could be used to make tortillas.  ??? )

Next time I think I'll talk to the folks at the market--that sounds like a really good idea.

Be warned - Sawers is a great wee shop but they are EXPENSIVE. It does pay to shop around. Also, if you can wait for the online shipping, you may consider ordering direct from Cool Chile (who I think is what Sainsburys are carrying).

Just noticed the ad for Mex Grocer on this site, which says 20% off for UKY members - here's the link to masa harina

the Mexican booth at St Georges market tomorrow
What kind of things are sold there?  I'm wondering if it would be worth my while to take a trip up for the market sometime.

The market is fun, it's basically a farmer's market, with a number of butchers and fish mongers, and a handful of foodie booths thrown in. There is a live band that plays (different band every week) and it's very child-friendly. Plan on going to have a snoop and luch and let the kid dance to the music. The Mexican booth is just a food stand, he makes tacos and nachos and burritos, and has a (very, very, very) small selection of goods to buy (primary purpose is to sell meals, not goods). His salsa is very good and you won't be disappointed by the food.

If you go up this week there is the other market at City Hall. I went yesterday and it was great.  Didn't make it to St. George's though :(

Ah yes, the European market - was just there this afternoon! Beer garden and bratwurst, what more can you ask for. St George's is sort of like that but local vendors instead of the Continental ones. And no beer. But coffee, tea, and fresh juices.

I know Sawer's is expensive, but if they carried the stuff it would probably work out cheaper than taking the extra bus trip to Sainsbury's. Looking at Mexgrocer and Cool Chile I think that online ordering may be the way to go, at least if I can come up with enough things to justify the shipping cost--shouldn't be hard.  ;) Sainsbury's is indeed carrying Cool Chile's masa, but they had 375g packages for £2.99 whereas Cool Chile has 500g packages for £2.30.  ???

Does St. George's market get to be more of a farmer's market during the summer? We've been a few times, and it is fun, but it's been heavy on prepared foods and crafts/antiques/junk. I miss having a "proper" farmer's market with lots of fresh produce. Although we've started getting our veg delivered from Helen's Bay Organics, which is lovely--and we don't have to get up early on Saturday morning to get it!

Bratwurst steak perhaps? Absolute heaven. Had that, the dutch pancakes with powdered sugar and toffee syrup. After that, churros. My goodness was I stuffed for the rest of the day. I love that market. Can't wait until it's back in Derry

Haunted you'll have to let me know when it is again.  I always seem to miss it since I'm not in the town all that often.  We can make a day of it and pig out ;D
