How to get to the UK?
« on: November 05, 2016, 08:01:44 PM »
Hello,

My application for British Citizenship has been accepted (yay!), however, I am currently in Pakistan and cannot travel to the UK (I need a visa or something of the sort) (p.s I don't have an ILR either, long story short, I was given nationality on basis of my birth in the UK).

Now how should I get to the UK? Who can I contact for help? I have called the Home Office as well as the Visas and Immigration, they did not help much. Also, I cant apply for a Visa because those are for tourism/business purposes and my intent it obviously to attend my ceremony.

PLEASE help! Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: 7 People have seen this but no replies, is the situation really that bad?

I would have thought you would have your citizenship ceremony in Pakistan, then apply for your British passport?

I will call up the embassy first thing Monday morning. Thank you. :) Also, after my ceremony can I apply for an emergency travel document instead of a passport? In Pakistan it can take more than a year to get your first British passport! That is too long for me.

From what I understand emergency travel documents can be issued to citizens in case they don't have a passport and want to travel.

As this site is primarily for Americans coming to the U.K., we don't know the process for other countries.

In the US, once citizenship is granted, you apply for your first British passport and must do so before traveling.

First adult passports do take a while. You can calculate the minimum time on this site

I don't think you will be allowed to use this service to bypass the wait for your first British citizen passport?

Would it be possible to use your Certificate of Naturalization to enter the UK?  Say, if you had the ceremony in Pakistan and receive your Certificate, and then presented that to an IO upon arrival in the UK?  We know that the US requires US citizens to use US passports to enter the US, but unless something has changed and I'm not aware of it, the UK does not have such a requirement.

I was able to enter the UK with my Certificate and US passport when I needed to travel soon after my ceremony and I didn't have time to apply for a first adult British passport.  The IO did advise to get a passport ASAP upon returning, but I didn't have any problems entering the UK this way.  I will add a disclaimer that I had ILR before obtaining UK citizenship; I'm not sure if that will totally change the feasibility of this plan.

I believe having ILR changes things 100%.
