Car Insurance ??
« on: November 17, 2016, 09:33:30 PM »
I am trying to use different comparison sites to get quotations for car insurance and I am having difficulty trying to figure out what to fill for the 'type of licence' and 'how long have I held this licence for'.

For my driving experience, I had my US license for more than 15 years before I moved to another EU country, during which I had got my EU driver license for more than 3 years before moving to the UK.

So what should I put for those 2 fields?

And what about 'no claim bonus'? Would they accept a it if I can provide proof written by my US car insurance companies to claim the years?  And can I add all the years since I have a license to drive (18 years)?

You may find it easier to call companies to get quotes/go through a broker/call companies that do not feature on comparison websites as the reps can tailor the answers for you.
Www.moneysavingexpert.com has tips and hints on what to do if you're not the average customer, and a list of companies not in the usual comparison websites.
I had a U.K. licence for 35 + years, a US license for 10 + years, but as I had lived in yet another non EU country for a few years before trying to obtain UK insurance it proved to be easier to just explain the situation to a person.  Good luck in your search!

I've said this many times on this forum and I'll say it again: talk to Aviva. I spent hours upon hours searching for a company that would take my American driving history into account and they were the only ones who would. Saved me thousands of pounds!

Definitely speak to a person.  The risk is that you haven't had US insurance in three years, so may prove hard to count that.  But the EU insurance is worth asking about.  It's ALL worth asking about!

Ditto on Aviva. They honored my US driver history and no claims (I obtained proof from my US car insurance company). It saved me a lot of money. I have my UK license now and I've stuck with them.

If that "got" is because that EEA country allowed you that without a test becasue of your US licence, that may not be accepetable by DVLA.

You really need to see if DVLA will accept your licence from another EEA country.

Just because an insurance company takes your money, it doesn't mean they will cover you if there is an accident if they find a reason not to.
