Visa Fees
« on: December 23, 2016, 06:37:07 PM »
Hi,

I got a job in the UK and the company is having me apply for a Tier 1 Exceptional Talent work visa.

The costs to me for obtaining this visa are going to be around $2000, including the Immigration Health Surcharge.

The company told me that they will reimburse the costs of obtaining the visa; will this be a taxable benefit?

My sole purpose in obtaining the visa is to be able to work for this company.

Thanks!

I'm not a tax expert but I wouldn't think it is a taxable benefit as it is a reimbursement of a moving expense.

I moved jobs within the UK several times and then to the USA and the company reimbursed all expenses with the moves including the costs of obtaining a work visa, and none of those payments were considered taxable perks.
