moving back - but mixed feelings!
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:58:44 AM »
Well, it's happened - I got a job in the US (at my old employer, which is great) so we're moving home in late June/early July. It's funny - I got the call last night offering me the job and instead of feeling ecstatic, I'm actually feeling really mixed about it. Part of is that we'll be moving to a really small town with limited job opportunities for my husband. (We've talked about it extensively, his current boss is toxic and so he's desperate to get out, and we know we won't be staying permanently, but it's still a little worrisome.) While I'm so, so excited to tell my parents that their grandbabies are coming home, I'm a bit heartbroken to tell my friends here.

The logistics are going to be tough but doable (expect lots of questions on how yall did it!) I'm just working through my emotions. We've had SUCH a wonderful time here and it's going to be a lot harder to leave than I thought!

Years ago when I read the "Culture Shock " book, I was surprised to learn that when you go back home you have a reverse culture shock.  Essentially, the up and down feelings that you had when you moved to the UK will all be experienced again.  If they were graphed, it would be a mirror image.

Something to look forward to I guess.

Big hugs.  We are here for you while you go through all the emotions!

Huge congratulations on securing a job though!  That's something to celebrate!!

We moved back in July 16 and I'm still amazed how hard it has been to settle.  This is probably due to the fact that we moved to Colorado, where we have never lived before, so it wasn't really "moving back" but moving again.

Just remember to give yourself time, I keep telling myself that every day (and I've even have five weeks back in England to see my friends as I was so miserable here).  What can I say?  For the first time in my life I am surrounded by my in laws!   ???
Family of 6, moved from
Dallas Texas to Amersham UK July 2011 :)
Amersham to Denver, Colorado July 2016 :(
The dog safely made the trip home with us though!  <3

Over 15 years in residential sales/rentals (in both countries), so please feel free to PM with any housing concerns.

Where in Colorado are you guys? I'm from Western Colorado via Minnesota.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

We wish you luck. We went to Boston for a 4 months assignment in 1989. That grew to 27 years..and  jobs with 6 companies in 3 different States. Made great friends who we certainly miss. The move back to London needed a lot of organising. Lots of paperwork (taxes, retirement accounts, banks, etc..) in addition to movers...so give it as much time as you can.
