Just for ILR and citizenship, you can't get citizenship without having ILR first, in any case.
The point is that you can do it at any time (even before FLR) as it never expires, so it's a good idea to get in out of the way early so it's one less thing to worry about later.

The Life in the UK test is only needed for ILR and citizenship. The same pass certificate can be used for both, so it only needs to be taken once. The pass certificate never expires, so I suggest taking it sooner rather than later to get it out of the way. Like with all other things visa-related, the test isn't going to get cheaper or easier (it used to be dead easy with common sense topics like credit cards, council tax and normal day-to-day stuff until early 2013, now it covers history and stuff).

I've got time......who knows what I'm going to do. But one thing that always scares me......depending on the Govt (UK or US....doesn't matter) to do the right thing. I got screwed nicely in the 80's believing some retirement crap from the US Govt folks.......I foolishly believed them when they said it was "in my best interest". They really meant....in the "their" best interest. I should have moved to Shangri-La....or possibly Lake Wobegon.
