tier 4 visa basic questions
« on: June 18, 2017, 08:38:34 AM »
So today I finally sat down and began filling out my visa form. I was able to fill out 99% of it, all but the final page asking for additional information. I believe that at some point I read in a thread that someone with criminal convictions should write a cover letter explaining their convictions in further detail, would this be the place for that? Or is that something that I should type up and print out? Another question I have is, after my biometrics apt, do I have to do anything else besides send everything in? And what do they want you to send it in? Like a manilla folder or what? And should the documents (when sent in) be in any certain order? Also, what should I bring to the biometrics apt (I know, a lot of questions) I just want to get everything right the first time. Thanks to anyone in advance for the help! Also, if you have any answers to questions I did not ask, but think may be helpful, I am all ears! I wish there was a step by step, super detailed list for a process as serious as this.

Just realized you are applying for tier 4, sorry. I had answered as if you were applying for a settlement visa.. not awake yet!  :)

There is no need to write anything in the Additional Information box if you don't want to.

If you have any convictions, you just give the basic details in the application form.

The cover letter we were talking about is mainly for spousal visa applications, not Tier 4 visas. However, if you wish, you can include a contents letter with your application package, where you can mention the convictions - it's really just to flag them up and give a small explanation.

For example:

'To The Entry Clearance Officer,

Please find enclosed my application form and supporting documents for a Tier 4 visa application. My course starts on X date.

As mentioned in my application, I have the following criminal convictions (mention details). These occurred when I was X age/Y months ago, and I received the following sentence (details). As I understand it, since they happened more than 12 months ago and they were dismissed, they should not affect my application for a Tier 4 visa. I am including my police records/relevant paperwork (whatever is applicable for you).

Yours Sincerely,
Your Name'

Another question I have is, after my biometrics apt, do I have to do anything else besides send everything in?

Nope, the process is as follows:

- apply online, pay for the visa, pay the IHS surcharge and book biometrics
- attend biometrics, where they will check your ID (passport) and stamp your appointment confirmation sheet
- after the appointment, place the stamped sheet and your passport with your documents
- purchase priority processing/shipping labels from VFS Global if you are using them (you may wish to do this before attending biometrics as the VFS website can be glitchy)
- mail the application and documents to NYC for processing within 5 days of biometrics
- wait for the visa to be issued and mailed back to you

And what do they want you to send it in? Like a manilla folder or what? And should the documents (when sent in) be in any certain order?

Whatever it will fit in - so usually just a padded envelope. If you are using the VFS round trip shipping labels, you'll need to go to a UPS store to pick up one of their envelopes to mail it in anyway.

Also, what should I bring to the biometrics apt

Your passport and printed biometrics appointment confirmation (with barcode on it).

Optional: your printed online application form. Not usually needed but you might want to take it just in case

Put all your documents in a logical order for example, admin (receipts, application forms, passports) then financial evidence, accommodation evidence, relationship evidence. Add photocopies in a second pile of anything you need returned. You don't need a folder, just put a rubber band around everything.

If you are using priority (recommended) place the receipt for that on the top and mark the outside of your package with settlement priority service.

Before you send it, keep a copy for yourself of the application and appendix 2. You'll be glad you did when it's time for the next application!  :)

The OP is applying for a Tier 4 student visa through New York, so none of this is relevant :P.

They should only need to include the following supporting documents:

- printed online application form and online Appendix 8
- stamped biometrics sheet
- CAS number (on application form)
- police/criminal records and conviction paperwork

Evidence of education qualifications and finances (tuition and living costs) do not need to be included for US applicants (as the US is considered low risk country), but you should have they available in case they ask to see them.
