National Insurance Number
« on: June 18, 2017, 06:05:22 PM »
Hi Guys,

I ust recently received my BRP Card after a successful FLR(M) application. I know that this may sound like a dumb question but am I allowed to apply for a National Insurance number? If so how do I go about doing so? Thank you so much for your help.

Of course you are :). You can start work in the UK without an NI number but you won't be taxed at the correct rate until you have it.

See here for how to apply for an NI number - as you have switched to FLR(M) you will likely need to attend an interview as part of the application:

I'm not sure yet as I have mine next week.

And I'm having to travel over an hour away for mine. I'm in Stirling Scotland but have to go all the way to Leith.  😣

You have to prove that you've been applying for jobs? It isn't enough to just want to get a job? And they may not even issue you one? What kind of crap is that?

Well, I've applied for one job but wanted to wait to submit more because I am making a last minute trip back to the states to see my kids.

Maybe I can get confirmation that I've applied for that one job. Who knows. But completely not surprising.

I had to do an in person appointment for my NINo and it's really easy.

Basically the 'interview' is them filling out a form for you. At least it was for me when I went to Nottingham. They do ask you details about your spouse. I think they need their NINo as well. It's been 3 years so I don't remember all the details.

If they asked me if I was looking for work, I just said yes as I was, but they didn't ask me for proof or anything. The only things I took to the appointment were my passport and BRP card. It was a busy office. I honestly think they employee I worked with was happy for an easy form filling exercise.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Same as lyonaria here - we had a look around and printed out a few job adverts, but really it was exactly that: the interviewer fills out a form for you, and that's that.

I think we were in and out in 20 minutes or so, and then the NiNo arrived in the post a couple of weeks later. :)
