Getting Settled in the UK
« on: November 04, 2018, 12:11:24 PM »
Hi everyone!!

So, I've been in the UK for about a month now and I think I'm finally getting settled here.. maybe? Anyway I was so surprised how different things are here versus the US. I wrote up a post about on my blog and I thought I'd share it here for a comfort to anyone else who just moved to the UK or is looking to move. I hope it helps!

Great blog post, thanks for sharing :). Glad you're getting settled :).

It's weird, but the correct response to 'Are you all right?' is 'Are you all right?' :P.

Or simply:
Them: "Alright?"
You: 'Alright?"

It's pretty much them acknowledging you and you acknowledging them back, rather than actually asking how you are :).

Interesting what you say about London being like New York - I agree... I lived in the US for a year as an undergrad and the most 'at home' I felt was when I spent 4 days in New York at the end of the year :).

That's helpful, people always ask me if I'm alright and then there is this awkward pause where I'm trying to figure out what to say haha!! London reminds me VERY much of New York.. It makes me feel more at ease haha!

If you are feeling that you are getting settled after just one month, you are doing *very* well. Give yourself a big pat on the back!   :)

You certainly sound 'alright'! I love your blog! Really positive! Of course, there will be things you don’t like too much. I was born here and there are quite a few things I don’t like. I was abroad for so long (45 years) it took me ages to get to the way of speaking here and I continue to use 'foreign' words sometimes. I am in London too and, apart from the litter, just love it. Whereas where I lived before was not conducive to walking (no one did unless they were very poor and had no car!) I can now walk for miles and see new buildings, new places every day if I wish. And lots of green spaces! Continue to enjoy and give yourself time to really feel at home!

Married 1966, left UK 1969, returned 1998, left again 2000, returned June 2014 (husband on spousal visa) granted FLR(M) November 30th 2016  and ILR on  24th May, 2019. Yeah!

Thank you so much!! I feel like I'm settling in finally. I do love that there is so much walking here. It made me realize how lazy I was in the US driving around everywhere haha! I also do love all the green spaces, it's very scenic here. I love it!
