Giving notice
« on: November 29, 2004, 12:41:29 AM »
We've reserved our wedding ceremony at York Register Office, and have confirmed that I have to be living in York district for 8 days before officially giving notice. How do I prove that I have been living in York for 8 days?  My plane lands at Manchester Airport, so a passport stamp would be useless.

Don't know if this would work, but why not go to the registry office required number of days ahead of time and say, "Hey, I'm here."

I don't know if that's good enough. I was in the register's over Thanksgiving weekend reserving a wedding date, but I'm not a UK resident yet.  Any tourist can visit the UK and walk into a register office.

I belive the passport stamp would still be fine...I flew into manchester, live in Cheshire and my passport stamp was good enough for them. I would simply call the office when you arrive to set up an appointment to give your notice and ask them what they need.

The passport stamp is fine.  I flew into Manchester and got married in Andover, and they were cool with it.

Actually, I just called the York Register office. Since I will be living with my fiance, they said he should write them a letter stating how long I have been living with him.

Er, when we gave notice in August the requirement was being in the district for 15 days prior to the wedding....

Maybe there's a bit of confusion between the 7 day residency period and the 15 day notice period.  ???
