Cost of Bringing 17lb Dog from LAX to LHR
« on: June 26, 2017, 08:17:25 AM »
Hello,
Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost for bringing a 17lb dog from Los Angeles to London Heathrow?

I have noticed the likes of Virgin Atlantic do offer the service but they do not give prices on their website. I'd be looking to do this at the end of the year in December.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

I didn't use a relocation company, so I have no idea on their rates.

I flew United, and they have a general cost range here: https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/travel/animals/rates.aspx

According to that, a 17lb dog would cost roughly $684. I don't think that includes customs fees, reception centre costs, extended hours fees, etc. For me, that was an additional $600 for two cats.

Call and ask.   :)

The fees on the UK side will be about £400.  I would budget $1500-$2000 all in (vet visits, crate, fees, etc.)

Funny you should say that...  ;)

As a total nerd, I kept a spreadsheet of every. single. moving and/or wedding expense. My crates and vet visits and airfare and handling fees all totaled $2,597.92 - given, that was for 2 cats, so one dog would cost a bit less!

Did you do that yourself?  We often have people asking about taking that route but almost all of us have flown straight into the UK.

It would be awesome if you could do a quick write up of the process for us. Maybe start a new thread.  :)

It would certainly be awesome if there were a write-up of the process :3 (lurker here, just posting for the first time, but I have a 45lb mutt I'm dragging across the pond with me within a year)

I brought 7 cats over from the Middle East.  They were unaccompanied.  They flew KLM into Amsterdam.

I know that most people here are coming from the States but thought I would mention that KLM has a fantastic reputation and excellent facilities were animals are concerned.

The cats went from Saudi Arabia to Amsterdam where they were fed and looked after, and then they were sent on to Manchester.  My 15 year old cat strutted out the carrier.  They were all really happy.  I was stressed - they were fine!

I posted a fairly thorough write-up on my experience flying into Amsterdam and taking the ferry over to Harwich.  Going through France is the same until coming in to the UK where instead of taking a ferry for around 60GBP you'd be taking the train/ toll roads for around 100euro.

Excellent, thank you! That will help a lot of people.  :)
