Letter of support- Am I on the right track?
« on: December 28, 2017, 11:47:55 PM »
Hi all! I'm just wondering if you could take a quick look at our letter of support and advise if it is sufficient or should be more detailed?  I mean I have a table of contents which list EVERYTHING I'm including in the the packet so I didn't think I should list them again in the letter of support.

Again...thanks in advance!

Roz

Dear Sir or Madam:

I, John Doe am writing this letter to express my desire to obtain a Spouse Settlement Visa for Jane Doe, as we were married on May, 2018 in Anaheim California, USA.

Jane Doe and I met online in 2016.  I have traveled to the US three times and she has traveled to U.K. three times.  Initially we were going to settle in the US, but seeing as her son is an adult and my daughters are very young, it made more sense to settle here in the U.K. in order that I can be closer to the girls and continue to help rear them.  I am a British citizen, born and raised in Cardiff, Wales.  I have worked for the Cardiff City Country Council for the past 14 years as a EMPLOYEE. I have provided a notarized copy of the bio page of my passport along with, bank statements, employment contract and pay slips for the last 6 months.  I do meet the financial requirements necessary to support my wife per annum; however these 6 pay slips will not demonstrate that because my shifts vary and while overtime is plentiful it isn’t on the same day/time of the week/month. So alternatively, we are including my wife’s fully vested 401k savings account to add to my salary.  The account has held a minimum of £000,000 for the past 6 months which means we can apply £000,000 of that to my total salary, together, the total not only meets, but exceeds the £18,600 financial minimum.

Jane Doe plans to join me here in Newport, Wales in the flat I have let for us, located at ……….  Once here, she will obtain gainful employment and remain permanently, extending her Visa at the 2.5 mark and then applying for ILR upon the 5 year mark.  I fully support obtaining the Spouse Settlement Visa as a means to begin this journey of happily ever after.

Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

The letter has pretty much all the information you need, but I’d rearrange it and take some parts out.

For example:

To The Entry Clearance Officer,

I am writing this letter in support of a settlement visa for my wife (Name) to join me in the UK. I am a British citizen and have lived in the UK since birth.

I have been employed as (job title) at Cardiff City Council since (date) and my salary is £X, which I have been earning since (date). Although my base salary meets the financial requirement, my payslips from the last 6 months show less than this, so we are combining my income with my wife’s a 401K savings which has had £Y amount in it for the last 6 months, so we are using Category A and Category D to meet the financial requirements and are including the relevant documents to prove this.

When the visa has been issued (wife) and I will live at (address) which is an X bedroom flat which I am renting. I am including my original tenancy agreement plus a letter from my landlord giving (wife) permission to live there.

(Wife) and I met online on X date 2016 and entered into a relationship on Y date. We first met in person on Z date in X city. I have traveled to (city, state, US) three times to visit her (give dates and length of each visit) and she has traveled to (city, UK) three times to visit me (give dates and length of each visit). We keep in touch (daily/weekly/monthly) by (email/Skype/iMessage/WhatsApp). We got engaged on Y date and married in Anaheim, California on Z date 2018. We have decided to settle in the UK because I have (X number of) young daughters and I would like to live close to them.

Should you have any questions regarding the application, please feel free to contact me.

Yours Faithfully,
My name
(you only use Sincerely when you know the recipient’s name)

Wow! Ksand24 I can’t tell you how incredibly grateful I am that you have taken the time to offer specific edits to our letter. What a vast difference from our version to yours. Your version makes it sound as if we are knowledgeable of the process and not flailing about (which is WAY more accurate) haha!

I will adjust accordingly.

Thanks again.

No problem :).

Basically you want it to be concise, without personal details (no declarations of love or or wishing for happily ever after... it’s about the facts only and stating what you are proving with hard evidence), and you want to structure it to address each requirement in order:

Paragraph 1 - how the sponsor is eligible to sponsor a visa (UK citizenship)

Paragraph 2 - how you meet the financial requirement and which category/ies you are using

Paragraph 3 - where you will live in the UK (address and property details)

Paragraph 4 - short history of the relationship (no personal stuff)... where/when you met, how you keep in contact, where/when you got engaged/married, why you are settling in the UK instead of the US.

Have you considered just using the 401k to apply and leaving your employment info out?  Less paperwork and an easier category to apply under.

Okay...got it.  Facts, not emotion.  Phew!   Where would I be without this forum!
Thanks again!

Hi KFdancer...I had not thought about just using the 401k alone but the total balance that would be needed (as of May 2018) will not have been consistently available for 6 months. We would have to push our application out a few months.

Guess you've given us something to think about.

Thank you kindly
