Washer/Dryer Combo, Help

So here I am, just moved to London to be with my hubby. Last week we bought a new Indesit washer/dryer unit. I just did a load of laundry yesterday. It took forever to finish. Which, fine, I can deal with that. But the dryer ended up stinking the whole flat up and made out clothes stink too. Is this normal for a “condensor” dryer? I’ve read some places that it helps to use low heat. I’ll try that next. But I’m so dissappointed. Anyone have any experience with this

I guess I should have explained the smell....it’s like a hot rubber/oil burnt smell.

I suppose you could try a lower heat setting or stop it earlier but if that doesn't work immediately, I'd return it as faulty and get a different kind.
There are all sorts of consumer protections in the UK and a dryer that makes your clothes smell bad is not fit for purpose.

Thanks larrabee. I will try the lower setting first. We got an extra protection plan on it so there shouldn’t be any problems returning it.

Mine smells exactly the same, like  an oily steam engine.  I was under the impression that it's normal and it's also the reason they don't sell them in the states.  You may have a tough time getting your money back as it may just be normal operation. 

If it helps, after two years, the smell is less noticeable, or maybe I am just going native and don't notice as much.

Please be sure that yours is not subject to a recall and/or at risk of fire.  Which? Magazine has a campaign to stop retailers selling dryers that burst into flame but they still do.  Google it and be sure about yours. 

Just mentioned this to my wife. She had one 15+ years ago.....said it was about the worst thing she ever bought. The dryer ruined a lot of clothes....she just couldn't turn it down far enough to keep what she was drying ok. She ended up only putting towels in it. She thought it was because the drum was metal and just got too hot.

We have a washing machine/condenser dryer and it definitely doesn't and never has done that to my knowledge.

It does take a stupidly long time to do a single load of laundry though...

Ours did that to some bathrobes (synthetic material) when I had it on too high a setting. Same robes went through fine when put on the synthetic setting at "hang dry" rather than full dry setting. No stink at all. SO perhaps, if it's not doing the stinkorama on towels and other cottons it is the heat setting is up too high?

Under EU law if you bought online you can return for any reason within 14 days. OP said they bought it last week.

That's true, and she may be able to return it based on Larrabee's point that it's not fit for purpose.  Or some retailers may just take it back for whatever reason. 
I am surprised that other people's dryers don't stink like mine and the OP.

Thanks for everyone’s responses. I bought it at Curry’s and they have a 30 day policy. Having said that though, the last couple days I’ve used it several times on a lower heat setting and it has not smelled at all. So I think I must have just been cooking my clothes. 😂 It’s not anything like the dry that my dryer in California produced, but I’ll take it.

I just used mine on the hottest setting to wash  my toiletry bag and a shoulder bag.  (don't ask why). Both were fabric with plastic bits and cardboard like bits.  They got completely distorted as you would expect.  They sure are clean though.
