Need copies of original documents as well?
« on: December 13, 2017, 08:13:12 AM »
So through this whole process, I've been assuming we would need to provide all original documents (or certified/notarized copies), which would then be returned to us -- just like when you apply for a passport.

But today, my husband went for his biometrics appointment and got a handout about what to do next with the following statement (in its own paragraph, formatted exactly like this): Please provide copies of any original documents you would like returned to you.

Huh? This is the first I've heard about providing copies, so now I'm confused. Do these need to be certified/notarized copies or just regular photocopies? Of everything we might need back (including bank statements and such, in case we need to reapply) or just official documents like passports and marriage certificates? Should we just include a copy of the entire application package?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Yes, you need to provide regular photocopies of all original/certified documents that you wish to be returned to you... or they may keep the originals.

So, it's up to you what you send copies of - it doesn't have to be the whole package.

Remember though, you only have 5 days from the biometrics appointment to mail everything to Sheffield.

You should send regular photocopies of anything that you would like returned to you to make sure you receive your originals back to you.

You should also keep a copy of the application forms for your own records, that'll be useful for the next application.

Thank you! I was afraid I was going to have to run out and get a bunch of stuff notarized at the last minute.
