ILTR - Repatriating to USA Questions
« on: January 10, 2018, 06:04:16 PM »
I currently have a status of Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.  I've lived here around 8 years.  There is always a chance I could move back so I had some questions.

Do I need to surrender this status if I move back to the US?  What about taxes, will I be obligated to then report my U.S. income to the UK if I repatriate and don't surrender this status?

I haven't obtained citizenship at this point but what are the implications if I do and move back?

Regards

You should apply for citizenship before leaving.

ILR is cancelled after two years away.  The key is that it's indefinite leave to REMAIN.

Yup, get citizenship first, definitely!

UK taxes based on residency so if you’re not living there any more, you don’t need to file.  :)

If it helps, I just applied and it took right about 4 months.  Hopefully they are keeping to the same quick timelines.
