I signed up for a science fiction / fantasy book club at work,  only to find that the first book is some fantasy junk about Greek mythology called “Cerces”. I should have bailed when I had the chance. I prefer to read a page-long equation about how many potatoes you can grow on Mars.  I’m sticking it out because I’m too embarrassed to quit.

I have never understood why fantasy and sci-fi are in the same category.  Fantasy uses magic and supernatural powers, and mythical beings.  Science is the opposite of all of that.  I don't get it.

Anyway, I would NEVER sign up for a "scifi/fantasy" book club, because that generally means "fantasy book club", and that's not for me.

Every brain cell was screaming "leave now while you still can!"

It's just so rude to get up and say "actually, your taste sux" and leave

But as I just demonstrated in the IA thread, I make stupid decisions, too!  At least yours wasn't potentially life-threatening.

I'm just about 1/3 the way through, but so far, I highly recommend "Reasons To Stay Alive" by Matt Haig.  It was recently given to me by a friend, and is a memoir written by the author who suffered a severe mental health crisis several years ago.  Obviously, it centers around mental health issues and suicide, so be forewarned if these topics are difficult for you.

It's striking a good balance between being frank and honest about how terrible you can feel during the darkest times, while also being optimistic that you can overcome your emotional demons.  It's not all doom-and-gloom, but nor is it awkwardly chirpy or disproportionately upbeat.  It's casual and easy to read, and at times, has a great sense of humour.  It's very eloquent in describing the invisible feelings that can occur in your mind.  IMO, this should be required reading at schools.

Just an update on Circe if anyone 's interested. It's actually gotten quite good, I'm not unhappy I was convinced to read it.

Bad news is I am nowhere Near finished with the assigned reading this week.  Those kids must read 3 hours a day,  why aren't they drinking or having sex instead?
