I have 2 more questions for you..
How long can the animal stay at the ARC?
Who delivered your pet, and how much did it run?
No idea how long you're allowed to leave them at the ARC (like if you needed to pick them up the next day or something). I imagine they'd have some way to board pets, since they still have to quarantine some.
I was intending to arrange our cat's transport myself, but between the paperwork and the timing, it was just too much. Only one airline (United) would let us book our pet as cargo from Portland, OR, ourselves (Delta flew out of Portland, but would only work with an agent).
Two of the four agencies I contacted didn't get back to me and one sent me a quote for shipping from Seattle (3+ hours away). We ended up using Pet Relocator (
http://www.petrelocator.com/), because they were the only ones left (and the quickest to reply -- United took almost a week).
In the end, I'm glad we went with them. Our vet screwed up the paperwork TWICE and our agent spent ages on the phone with them trying to get it fixed. I definitely didn't need that stress on top of everything else!
It ended up being about $2800 total, including transport to and from both airports (the agent contracted local pet transporters on either end, Go Pet Go and Jalsa, respectively). I think $750 was agency fees -- the rest was airfare, ARC fees, etc.
I think if you're coming to and from a major hub and have access to a car at either end, you could do it yourself, but we had too much stuff and were relying on others for rides, so having someone else handle it was worth it for us.
