Hi! Newbie here

Hi everyone! I’ve been lurking around the forums on and off for awhile now, and I thought it was time to join! I’m an American citizen with a British citizen fiancé, and we are getting married in the US next month! We hope to apply for the UK spouse visa shortly after, and we’ve already begun gathering necessary docs.

I’ve spent a lot of time looking through visa advice on this site already thanks to a Google search that brought me here! It’s so refreshing to find this community, especially because our friends and family, while sympathetic, just don’t understand the stress and work involved in a long distance relationship, long distance wedding planning, and the entire visa process. We have love ones on both ends who keep asking if I’m moving to the UK right after the wedding. Oh, if only! 

Anyways, I just wanted to say hello to everyone! Looking forward to getting to know people here! I just might convince my fiancé to join as well!

I am glad you found us!  You should definitely have your fiance join!  It makes sense, because both of you will be working on these applications over the next five years, so it's good if you both understand the process and can easily ask questions as they come up. (Definitely try to share the same thread for asking your visa questions in, though!  It helps to keep the details of your situation all in one thread for easy reference.)  Plus, it's nice for both partners to have a place to discuss the ups and downs of an immigrant in the relationship... no matter how much we look forward to the move, adjusting isn't always easy after the novelty wears off.

Thanks! You have a good point - I’ll encourage him to sign up as well. I have been looking through other people’s visa questions on here in hopes of not having to post for help too much when the time comes!  But I will keep my queries all to one thread. I can already tell this is a very supportive community, which is certainly what I need because honestly the distance and waiting makes me want to pull my hair out!

Hi! Oh, nice! Congrats on making it across! My fiancé and I discussed the fiancé visa route and just decided to get married in the US instead. Plus I think my family here would be a bit hurt if I decided to marry and move to the UK - small consolation prize for them! 

I can already tell this is a very supportive community, which is certainly what I need because honestly the distance and waiting makes me want to pull my hair out!

It really is a great place.  We'll try to keep as much hair on your head as you had when you joined.  But, trust me, most of us have been in your position.  If it weren't for this forum, I don't know where I'd be!

Your way is also much less hassle and cost as you'll skip an entire visa application. And you won't be stuck in the UK without the right to work while on the 'fiancee' (marriage) visa.

Exactly, that’s another positive to the spouse visa route! I am looking forward to leaving the horrible job I have now behind, but I know it won’t be long I’ll be ready to start something new to get me out of the flat each day. Plus I don’t want the financial burden to all be on my husband. And yes, I very much want to keep the hair on my head!
