Open University?

Has anyone had any experience with Open University?

Apparently if you live in Scotland and have a personal income under 25K a year, you can get your part-time fees covered by a waiver. (There's nothing in their prospectus that says I have to have been here 3 years, but I bet that's the case. It just says "resident in" but not for how long.)

I have been considering going back to school to study something I like (it would have been in the History/Economics departments at my prior institutions) and if that waiver will apply even if you already have a degree, I may just well do it. Would be better for me than schlepping to a formal classroom, too.


EDIT:  Nevermind. I'd have to have lived here for three years, and I'd also have to have earned my UG degree without any financial aid from the USA. (Fat chance, there.) Now, if I didn't already have a degree from the USA that had financial aid associated with it, when I hit the three-year mark I'd sure consider doing this. Not worth paying 5K for a vanity degree, but if it was free or reduced cost I'd do it.

I think about Open University now and then.......I didn't know it was still going. Back in the day (early 80's)....it was what was on when you came home late and drunk and couldn't quite get to sleep. Watching Open University back then could put anybody to sleep.

The Open University is nothing like what F4mandolin says these days. It's a proper University and it's very good. One of my friends is making his way through a music course and has to go to Manchester every once in a while for lectures, etc.

I have a co-worker whose 20 year old son spends as much time in the USA as he can with his girlfriend , but does his studies through the Open University.  Works perfect as he can study from far away.
